2018: Excise Tax
Insurers and employers who self insure will be charged a nondeductible 40 percent excise tax on the cost of employee health coverage that exceeds $10,200 for single coverage and $27,500 for family coverage (popularly known as "Cadillac" plans). Thresholds are increased for high-risk workers and retirees, and the tax will be indexed for inflation. Multiemployer union plans have more lenient rules, including a $27,500 threshold for any coverage, whether family or single.
